Book Review Submissions

For Book Reviews

If you would like to write a book review, please send your request with the following information to the editors: houstonreviewofbooks@gmail.com

  1. Your name, email, postal address, and phone number (often a requirement from publishers).
  2. A short biography.
  3. Book(s) that you would like to review. We recommend books that are drawn from our list of recent books of review (below) but we are willing to consider older books if the reviewer provides a fresh perspective or analysis. Please include publication details if possible.

Guidelines for Reviewers

  1. The review should provide an account of the book as a whole, not just of one part or aspect. It should include a brief overall characterization of the book so that readers can tell quickly if they are interested in reading the entire review.
  2. The review should situate the book in contemporary debates, discussions, or fields so that uninitiated readers can find their way about.
  3. It should give an evaluation of at least some key aspects of the book and not merely provide a summary. Make sure to give reasons for evaluations, particularly negative ones.
  4. The review should be between 1,500-2,000 words.
  5. Finally, we expect reviewers to utilize the Chicago manual of style (see above).
